Keynote address: commerce in the 2020s - disrupted and disrupter |
Trade wars, regional conflicts, social and political unrest, regulatory change – the one certainty as we enter 2020 is uncertainty. And uncertainty makes life difficult. It is disruptive. Yet with that disruption comes opportunity – the chance for the commercial community to be at the forefront in delivering social and economic benefit. Last year, the Financial Times recognised how the role of commercial and contract management is itself disruptive. It offers solutions. It challenges the tired and failing model of functional siloes and unproductive contention systems. It welcomes change. Winston Churchill said: ”An optimist sees the opportunity in every difficulty, a pessimist sees the difficulty in every opportunity.” Commercial and Contract Management can blend optimism, realism and powerful use of data to establish a new business discipline, driving commerce through the 2020s. What are the key enablers, who are the key stakeholders, and where are the bear-traps? Thought Provoker: transforming our world - what is the role of the Contract Manager in achieving Sustainable Development Goals? Contracts and trading relationships clearly have a critical role in framing and achieving business goals. The growing focus and awareness on Sustainable Development is transforming those goals in both public and Private Sector. There is now an accepted urgency propelling companies to set up objectives and targets, but how will these impact contracting and selection processes? As we look around the world, progress is patchy and the role of the CCM community is not consistent or defined. A lot of private focus is naturally on logistics chains and innovation; governments have targets and plans in place, however their ambition and results so far vary a lot. This session will take a closer look at some specific case studies, giving real life insights into what can and is being achieved. More importantly, we want to provoke the question in you - what is the role of the contract and commercial manager in changing the world? How should you contribute and where do you start? Tim Cummins Professor, Leeds University; President, IACCM Erik Nordling Founder, NXB AB; Fellow, IACCM |
You have just been asked by your CEO told you that you implement a new CLM system – what is achievable and where do you start? Contract for Change – how does procurement help deliver a socially responsible and sustainable future Every transaction, every contract, every engagement is an opportunity to fundamentally change how procurement can positively create social value and limit environmental impact. All organisations have legal and regulatory obligations and most organisations have clear external policy statements which commit them to operate in a socially responsible and sustainable manner. Procurement must build upon its current skills and capabilities, using increasing access to data and technology maximise their organisation's positive impact whether locally or globally. Reimagining the education and training that our legal profession sorely requires With new technology comes new ways of streamlining activities around transactions, but fundamentally clients still value lawyers who help them design and close successful deals. Unfortunately, traditional training methods focus primarily on teaching lawyers how to resolve legal complexity but not transactional complexity. In this fascinating session, Duc will introduce the framework of “private orderings”—a set of tools and methodologies he’s recently developed to give lawyers the cognitive tools and models to accelerate the development of strong commercial skills found in effective transactional lawyers. By mapping the potential business impact of contractual clauses and legal positions, transactional lawyers can use the framework to demonstrate the commercial value and relevance of a lawyer’s role and advice in a deal. People and technology: is physical negotiation dead or is the increasing use of advanced technology in negotiation diminishing the quality of results? The right mix of people and technology is critical to CCM Capability. But it’s not only the proportions, it’s the kind of technology and how it blends with the people that matter to bake successful CCM outcomes. To what extend has negotiation moved from being a physical to a virtual activity? And is the result a reduction of openness of conversation, and empathy towards counterparties? Building on from the introduction to the Strategic Guide we will discuss how we can we begin to exercise better judgment in our understanding of the use of different communication methods? What is the cost of using technology in certain situations where there needs to be a more intimate connection? Keynote zoom address and call to action: compliance lessons from the FIFA scandal |
Corruption is like a pervasive weed; once it takes root, it can be almost impossible to destroy. Yet at last, there is a growing drive for transparency, for ethical standards, for fair dealing - and the commercial community should stand at the heart of this movement. We see individuals and industries coming together, setting new standards. Alexandra Wrage has committed a large portion of her career to this battle for change, to inspire others, to provide the methods and training that enable a better approach. And she has been at the heart of some of the highest profile situations - perhaps none more so than at FIFA, the governing body of world soccer. Hear her story, understand why it matters and be inspired to join the movement for change! Question time: Following Alexandra insights into the FIFA scandal IACCM Global CEO will pose some important questions for individual practitioners in the CCM community. How do we ever escape being driven by ‘profit’ and what is the impact that has on ethics? What is the role and responsibility of our community in making or supporting change? Right now, neither public nor private sector appear ready to even enter the dance floor. They are like nervous teens standing at the edge and waiting for someone else to make the first move. Skills and behaviours: are we facing a talent crisis? Almost 1,000 IACCM members contributed to the 2019 talent survey and their input should act as a wake-up call to senior management. Improvement and innovation: what do suppliers and buyers need to do to foster innovation? Innovation and continuous improvement are fundamental to the survival of an organization. So, what methods and techniques can be employed in order to increase the frequency and likelihood of innovation and improvement delivery?

Modelling the EU Economy as an Ecosystem of Contracts Over the last two years the R&D Lab of Trakti together with CommonAccord IACCM have undertaken a feasibility study around modelling the EU Economy as an ecosystem of contracts. This session will present the first findings of the study. Together we will explore the feasibility of the EU economy as an ecosystem of (legally enforceable) contractual relationships and the opportunity to create an Open Trust Fabric, a system of transacting and relationships that is open, secure, data-minimising and democratic. The Open Trust Fabric would support both the reporting of an economy as an ecosystem of contracts and actually implementing it. Sally Guyer Global CEO, IACCM Luigi Telesca Co-Founder & CEO, TRAKTI |

Ed will reveal how purpose plays a key positive role in defining both individual and team behaviours, as well as creating naturally collaborative contractual relationships, which in turn enable LCCC to carry out its purpose (facilitating low-carbon investment, lowering the cost of capital) environment. Keynote address: how do you build a psychologically safe workplace? |
What differentiates great teams from not so great teams? In an extensive 2-year study conducted by Google they discovered that by far the biggest differentiator of high performing teams is psychological safety. In an era where knowledge has become one the most powerful economic levers and uncertainty increasingly prevalent, the need for high quality communication is critical, so, why don’t people feel that they can speak up at work? CCM as a discipline is very often focused on protection and compliance and work environments can be shrouded with a fear of failure. In this fascinating session Rhonda will explore how to create an environment where risk is embraced as an opportunity and innovation is actively encouraged. Rhonda Brighton-Hall Founder & CEO, mwah |
